About NUJ Extra

NUJ Extra is the registered charity for members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).

We try to help:

  • NUJ members
  • Former NUJ members, and
  • The dependants of former members who have died

We are funded by NUJ members through NUJ contributions and by personal donations. We aim to assist those who have fallen on hard times and who could do with some temporary financial help. We may also help members or dependants with one-off grants to cover unforeseen large bills due to becoming disabled or seriously ill.

Over recent years we have bought electric wheelchairs, helped with finding the advance rent for those who have become homeless, paid for property adaptations for members who have been disabled, helped with removal expenses for a person fleeing domestic violence and paid countless utility bills.

We consider each case on its merit and work to guidelines that are reviewed every year by the trustees.
